Elderslie
Elderslie lies between Paisley and Johnstone. Nowadays it is a pleasant residential area though it has had an industrial past, more information for which can be found on the Renfrewshire Council website. Facilities in the village include a fine golf course, Elderslie Golf Club with wonderful views across the Clyde Valley to Ben Lomond and the Campsie Fells, the Wallace Bowling Club, and Elderslie swimming pool, which has a 25 meter pool, sauna and dance studio.
Elderslie is celebrated as the birthplace of Scotland's hero of the Wars of Independence, William Wallace. On the traditional site of his home is a memorial erected in 1912. It has a series of sculpted plaques around a column reminiscent of a medieval market cross. The plaques illustrate the key moments in Wallace's career. The memorial is adjacent to the Wallace Yew and the foundations of the 17th century farmhouse known locally as Wallace's House.
