Erskine
Erskine "new community" was conceived in the 1960s and designed to accommodate up to 30,000 people although it has not grown to that extent. The area has an interesting history.
The former Erskine Estate was taken over in 1916 to provide nursing and medical care for former members of the Armed Forces through two world wars and more recent conflicts. Many of the fine buildings of the estate have been restored and found new modern uses. The grand main house of the estate was sold and is now Mar Hall, a very splendid 5 star hotel, with spa and a championship golf course under construction. The Erskine charity itself runs businesses developed to provide rehabilitation, work, training and employment for residents and disabled workers. The former stable block is now a first rate conference, meetings and training centre, the Reid Macewan Centre.
